Your CV or “CVella” on Jobzella!

CVella is a new blending of the two words CV and Jobzella. It’s an outline of a person’s educational and professional history. It conveys your personal details in a way that presents you well. A CV is a marketing document in which you are marketing YOURSELF, and you have to learn how to “sell” your skills, abilities, qualifications and experience to employers.

What information should a CV include?

The most important information that should be included in any CV is:

–        Personal details: name, address, date of birth, contact details like phone number and personal email…etc.

–        Summary (optional): A summary is a customized section of a resume that lists your key achievements, skills, and experience relevant to the position which you are applying for. A brief and concise selling for your skills indicates a part of your talent, dedication and professionalism. This part is typically not more than four or five lines, and it has to be phrased in an attractive way to convince the employer why to hire you.

–        Education and qualifications: List your degrees, grades, major, faculty, university and high school, along with the courses, certificates, or diplomas. List your education in reverse chronological order which means you have to start with the latest.

–        Work experience: List your job titles, name of the companies, location, years of experience, and what you did in terms of responsibilities and achievements. You have to start with your most recent job and work backwards

–     Interests and achievements: Hobbies and interests. Always use relevant interests that give you more credit and make your CV so special.

–        Skills: List the languages, computing and specific skills that the company is looking for, such as targeted skills. For example if you are applying for a sales job you better use: Sales, presentable, communication skills…etc. Also you can add a section for the awards you earned or the projects you participated in (if applicable).

–        References:  An important section is the references to the people you have worked with in the past such as professors, previous employers, a colleague…etc., who have seen your work and can praise it. Use two or more references including a recent employer. Write down their full names and contact information (including their phone numbers and emails). N.B. Through Jobzella you can also ask them to write a brief recommendation about yourself and your skills, talents, achievements…etc.

There are several candidates for the same job, so what makes your CV glow?

Let’s start with analyzing each and every part in the CV. Let’s agree that the CV can be split into two parts, namely a typical part and a creative part. Under the typical part come the personal information, education, qualifications, and references. On the other hand, there is a creative part which includes the majority or the most highlighted and important parts in the CV such as the summary, work experience, interests and achievements, and skills. This part needs to be well written and displayed in an efficient way to show how relevant and qualified you are to the job. Remember a CV is a marketing document in which you are marketing YOURSELF, and you have to “sell” your skills, abilities, qualifications and experience to the employer.

Tips to have a unique and brilliant CV:

One of the most challenges that faces each and every person in writing his CV is that he is not fully aware of the job and the company he is applying for and by being aware I mean that you don’t spend any effort to get to know about the company’s history, Job role, and the relevant keywords that you need to use, which is so crucial.

Relevant keywords are the words that those hiring managers search for when going through different CVs. The procedure normally takes from two to three weeks to hire so they go through a minimum of 100 CVs to find the best qualified candidates. Thus, keywords should directly target the jobs you are interested in.

The most important advice is that you have to:

–        Be Selective and ask yourself will this information help convince the employer that you are a worthwhile candidate to interview for the position they are trying to fill?

–        Prioritize the information you provide in each description. The most relevant information must come first.

–        Be Concise and to the point. Create effective statements.

–        Use Unique interests or hobbies will make you stand out and that reflect a positive image, for example, list hobbies that portray you as a team-oriented individual, and don’t use the old boring clichés.

–        Highlighting your major achievements.

–        showing evidence of employability skills such as team working, organizing, planning, persuading, negotiating etc
