Where to Start a Career in Marketing-Part II

Marketing has many faces and areas and they are all generally exciting. From communications to public relations and branding, it is all about raising awareness about your brand and your company and getting the product appreciated, understood, respected and more importantly, sold.

To work in Marketing, having solid background in both English and your native language is essential as well as creativity, communication skills and definitely the ability to work under pressure.

If you dissect any Traditional Marketing department, you will likely find the following sub-departments or roles assigned to team members.

Communications/Marcom: This is all about getting the correct message across about your company and its products or services. This job involves close work with copy writers, graphic designers and printing agencies. Working in communications involves a great deal of creativity and an eye for detail. Communicating your company’s products/services means overseeing print material and giveaway documents such as sales kits, media kits, offers to be used by sales and business development, press releases to be handed out, etc. A communications/Marcom specialist/manager typically oversees the copywriting, the design and production of such printed material.

As for Public Relations, the job here is all about managing and enhancing the image of your company in relation with events, media and press coverage. A career in PR means working with press releases, arranging events for your company or handling negative PR and solving reputation crisis.  Working in PR means being a people person, having the ability to think ahead and maintaining a calm exterior under pressure. Being presentable, funny and courteous doesn’t hurt either.

Branding, however, is essentially strategy. This means that working in branding involves working with the entire company and developing a strategy related to how your company’s or product’s brand is maintained across all platforms. Your job in branding also involves monitoring trends and looking at clients’ and consumers’ feedback to help develop your product’s image even further. You need to have strategic thinking abilities as well as a creative side. Branding specialists/managers tend to supervise anything that has to do with the company’s logo, tagline, mission and vision statements and anything else related to the company’s name and position in the Market.

Market research is a key function in every successful marketing department. Market Research will help any company in identifying endless opportunities as well as gaining a clear understanding of clients/customers’ needs.

As market research also focuses on understanding the position of each potential competitor, Market research specialists need to have an eye for detail, the ability to read between the lines and excellent research skills. From surveys, competitor research, to analyzing industry reports and market data, Market Research is a pillar of Marketing.

A typical marketing manager oversees all of the above and must possess strong knowledge and skills in the entire marketing related spectrum. But don’t forget that whether you have studied marketing or not, you can always learn the essentials of marketing by reading influencer blogs and staying updated with trends in traditional or digital marketing, you have to start somewhere and gain knowledge as you advance.
