Where to Start a Career in Art, Design and Creative

So you have an artistic flair, you like to play around with colors and shapes and create things that are out of the box. Good for you. Or maybe, you have a special talent with words and you can create wonderful copies and articles. But, how can you turn this into a lifelong career? Discover the Jobzella guide on where to start a career in the Art, Design and Creative fields.

When it comes to the field of Art and Design, you are more likely to find jobs at agencies instead of a regular company; the reason being is that, for an example, a typical company might not need a full time designer or illustrator for its marketing and communications departments which probably results in outsourcing to a dedicated agency.

In a strictly digital age like the world we live in today, working the design or art field requires a constantly updated person, software and trends are always changing and are always being updated and you need to keep up. You also need to have great communication skills in order to be briefed properly by the account manager/person in charge. You need to be able to accept criticism and have the ability to adapt to the surrounding environment and its requirements.

Typically, in the Art and Design fields as well as the Creative Field, job titles are more like this:

Graphic Designer/Illustrator/Art Director

These jobs typically go like this: you get asked to design certain elements to assist a company’s branding/advertising/marketing tasks. You might be asked to design a logo, branding layout, PR/Marketing/Sales material for print or web uses or flyers and brochures for a specific event or product release.

These jobs revolve around talent and you don’t really have to study art and design specifically (Although studying it would help with your technique, if you didn’t study art at college you can expand your horizons through free online courses).

Try to practice with software and design suites such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Coral Draw among other things. Search for tutorials online and create your own designs and share them professionally to expand your portfolio. Remember that when applying for design, art and creative related jobs , Your resume or CV don’t matter, what matters is having a portfolio and samples that demonstrate your design abilities and artistic flair. This job is very visual by default.

Copywriter/ Creative/Creative Manager

There is an important distinction to look at here. A Copywriter isn’t necessarily the person in charge of creating copy for Marketing/PR purposes or for creating articles or content for a company digital blog. A copy writer can also be the person in charge of coming up with a creative idea for an advertising campaign (sometimes called an advertising copywriter), which means analytics and trend watching plus a high sense of the market needs and audience direction. It is not just an idea, it is a world you need to paint with your creativity and understanding of your product and audience.

This job requires you to be constantly updated with what is going on in the advertising field and to always have a diary or a notebook handy with ideas and slogans you would like to use. This is a highly creative job and it also requires you to always think on your feet and to be able to become a team member and to function well under pressure.

A copywriter or creative can also be directly working on marketing and PR related copy such as writing material for flyers, brochures and sales/marketing kits. You need to have a very good understanding of prose and the ability to put down a copy that satisfies the needs and wants of audience and readers and deliver the needed information about a said product or service.

You need to have talent with writing and great language skills. You also need to have great communication and negotiation skills in order to be properly briefed by the person handling the process. This job also requires having clear writing samples and/or a portfolio to show recruiters and managers. This is also a job where your CV/Resume doesn’t really matter or what your college major was as long as you have some samples for the hiring people to read and assess your skills.
