Are You Really Unable To Work in Ramadan? Yes You Can!

Mid-adult businessman lying on sofa at office, looking tired, eyes closed. Bright background.

Ramadan is upon us, from tasty food and family gatherings to transcendent hours of prayer and meditation, Ramadan is truly a life changing experience that happens once a year.

But, don’t you always hear talk of shorter working hours and feel like you want to skip work altogether? You want all tasks to be gone and you daydream about your bed and that delicious Iftar table, don’t you? All you can think of is “I can’t really work in Ramadan”. The truth, you really can work in Ramadan and here is how:

1- Eat

Seems like a no brainer when it comes to Ramadan, but eating is essential here. Eat rich foods that are good for you especially at Sohoor. Think energy not just filling up your stomach. We recommend bananas, nuts and healthy fats. Some dates will do wonders as well.

2- Know You Can

It doesn’t matter if everyone says you really can’t function in Ramadan, if you know you can, you will. It is that simple!

3- Stay On Top of Things

Create a daily planner and organize your tasks, alternate between easy and hard tasks so you feel more accomplished by the end of the day.

4- Sign out of your Browser

Simply that means you are not logged in to all your social networks (even Jobzella), that means you will be less distracted, catch up on your networking after Iftar and leave working hours for work.

5- Miss your Morning Coffee? Take a Cold Shower!

Nothing will make you feel more awake in the morning then a cold shower, this one is guaranteed to make you feel like you just had gallons of coffee.

6- Try the ¼- ¾ Rule

Divide your time into 15 minute slots, if you work for 3 slots (that is 45 minutes) take the quarter as a break. In those 15 minutes, you can pray, catch up with coworkers (NO GOSSIP) and re-energize yourself. Get off the desk and stretch too.

7- Say You Are Busy

No need to be rude about it. But do make it clear to your coworkers, family members and friends that you are busy working while at work and that normal conversations can wait till you are home. To be safe, put your phone on vibrate or silent.

8- Color-Code your Life

Highlighters and markers are bright by default, in Ramadan, when concentration is hard to come by, tasks that are brightly colored will grab your attention which makes it highly more likely that you will actually get them done.

9- Go with the Light

Make sure your working space is brightly lit and has enough ventilation; this will make it less likely that you feel out of energy in the middle of your work day.

10- Ear Buds for the Win

If you have headsets, put them on even if you are not listening to Music. Breathe in and out listening to your own heartbeat and your concentration will come to you. If you don’t have headsets, get a pair of ear buds from any drugstore and they will do the same trick.
